This is my honest full retail price opinion since I received no discount nor free item to evaluate. I like analog radios for their longer battery life and longer life in general compared to digital radios. Actually I did not need this ICF-P26 but wanted to see what was up with the new little Sony because the legacy model it replaced is a favorite of mine. Sony has stopped making the ICF-S10MK2. It remains the single most revered analog AM/FM pocket radio of all time with a production run spanning three decades in essentially unchanged form. Original retail for the legacy model S10MK2 was $9.99 which went to $12.99 over the run.Sony now delivers the new model ICF-P26 at a $20 retail instead. A comparison between these two Sony pocket AM/FM models is appropriate since the P26 is the apparent successor to the S10MK2. Sadly it appears there will be no S10MK3. To be totally honest I never much liked the tone of the S10MK2 but do prize the strong AM reception. Wondering if the replacement P26 was as good or even better at reception and hoping it sounded better is why I bought a P26.Is the P26 is just a cosmetic repackaging of the same old S10MK2 as a way to charge more for essentially the same thing? The new cosmetics are a nice update, but not worth a 50% premium. It turns out the P26 is mostly new inside while retaining familiar legacy model features such as red tuning LED, wrist strap, tuning wheel on right, volume wheel on left, earphone/headphone jack on left, the exact same swing up design left-rear mounted FM antenna and is even almost exactly the same size and weight. The P26 is improved in several areas while Sony missed opportunities to improve it in others. Some valid long running criticisms of the S10MK2 were fully addressed in the P26, while one was mitigated and at least one other was completely ignored. They also changed some things nobody ever complained about.Ten improvements and notable changes I found in the P26: 1-The new Integrated Circuit is an astonishing 150% more energy efficient. The P26 Sony brand alkaline battery rating is 100 hours for FM opposed to 40 hours for the S10MK2. Both are rated a tad longer on AM. In typical real world use you will get even longer battery life than in the stress test format.2- Smoother voicing and more detailed sound on FM music is immediately apparent. The new IC squeezes more pleasing tonal voicing and better detail from the tiny speaker at reasonable personal listening volume for less listener fatigue. Of course you can still make it sound bad if too much volume is applied. Both the legacy Sony model and the new P26 use precisely the same size speaker, yet the two radios sound very different when tuned to the same FM classical station. Tonal advantage goes to the P26.3- At long last the 3.5mm headphone jack on the P26 works with stereo ear-gear to deliver mono audio to both earpieces ending a long running complaint about the left side only audio from the earphone jack on the legacy model. This was never really a big deal to me, but seemed like a huge deal to others. 4-The hinged battery door is now almost impossible to lose, even though you will open it much less often.5-A new battery monitor LED glows bright green with adequate batteries then dims as batteries weaken signaling the need to replace them. The LED battery monitor works only when the radio is powered up so it doubles as a pilot light even if the red tuning LED is not lit and the volume is down.6-Handy combination OFF/AM/FM slide switch on the right side. If you want the same station at the same volume as last time you just slide the switch UP to the proper band and it plays at the same volume so long as the tuning has not drifted too much. One click up for AM and two clicks up for FM. Easy to do with the thumb of one hand. AM/OFF/FM might have been a better arrangement. 7-Flatter case base with a seating rail that goes completely around the base of the radio. It is more stable than the legacy model which sat upon two very short rails molded only onto the narrow sides of the case bottom. The old S10MK2 falls over so easily you can sneeze at it and it falls over. So, I either hang one by the strap, hold it continuously or lie it down on a table as if it had already fallen over because that is where it will wind up eventually anyway. The new P26 still can be tipped over, just not as easily. 8-The P26 strap is a much thicker and softer material instead of the thin strap on the legacy model and it is also longer making it easier to get on and off of a man sized wrist. The strap is optional instead of being factory installed as well. The strap mounting holes have been moved to the opposite side of the radio from the FM antenna which makes the strap less likely to get caught between the FM antenna and the radio case when folding the antenna for storage, but now the strap tends to get in my way when tuning. This new location is the better of the two though. I think a strap is a useful safety feature on a pocket radio, so I installed it. 9- The much maligned swing-up FM antenna and antenna mount are retained from the S10MK2 but a new large plastic antenna mount topper is screwed into the P26 case back reinforcing the entire mount to hopefully block you from bending it. The downside to this new mount topper is it adds depth to the unit. Plus there are also new small retaining stops molded into the case to help keep the antenna in stowed away position, but they do not work much better than the legacy model's retaining stops. The FM antenna arrangement on the S10MK2 was always a trouble spot, and while you can still can break the antenna off on the P26 these modifications will help some. (An antenna that stows inside the radio is a better idea, even if it doesn't swivel.)10- The red tuning LED seems more helpful than the old one.The P26 isn't perfect. Here are my four disappointments and #1 is huge: 1-The P26 I received is a weaker receiver than either of my S10MK2's on both AM and FM. With any analog pocket radio model you can get a great one, a good one, a fair one or a dud. That explains the disparity in reviews. The P26 I got is good on FM and fair on AM while other copies may be better or worse. Which kind you get depends largely on how well the radio is aligned at the factory. Very little time is spent on precise alignment of cheap pocket radios, so it is a gamble of sorts. If you are not a technician with the right test gear and knowledge then resist the temptation to try a do-it-yourself alignment as you can make it worse or even wreck the radio. Reception is where my P26 loses two stars. I felt for 50% more money that it should be better than the legacy model but it is not.2- One improvement led to something you could take as a disappointment if you do not know what is going on. Remember how I said it sounded better with more detail on FM music? This new voicing is both a blessing and a curse. Output power to the speaker on both the P26 and S10MK2 is 100mw, but a P26 will generally be judged as softer in volume because the audio section of the new IC obviously has a wider frequency response which makes the tiny speaker sound richer. Lower frequencies eat more output power. So the more bass or lower mids sent to the speaker then the more power is needed to reach the same apparent loudness as a radio with no bass or lower mids at all such as the S10MK2. The P26 still gets loud enough for a pocket radio, which is personal listening volume. Clean room filling audio is not an attribute of any pocket radio I have ever had.3-After much criticism over the phone jack not being located on the top of the S10MK2 Sony left the jack in the exact same lower left side position on the P26. This is because the top is also the best place for the internal AM Ferrite bar antenna which takes up nearly the full width of the top and moving the jack to the top panel would mean moving the antenna to a less ideal spot or making it shorter which would be even worse. For pocket use you can mitigate the side jack location issue yourself by getting ear-gear with a 90 degree oriented plug instead of a straight plug. This isn't really important to me since I do not use ear pieces but people that do use ear gear are pretty vocal.4-Electromagnetic interference is still problematic on AM with no miracle innovation in the P26. In rooms with lots of RF noise from computers, florescent or CFL bulbs, neon lighting, Wi-Fi, cellphones, small appliances, sewing machines, etc the AM band is still only going to be usable for strong local stations. This also is the case for all other analog AM portables with this much sensitivity. All pocket AM/FM radios seem to exhibit their best reception when you are actually holding the radio in your hand and that hasn't changed here either.Summary: The new Sony ICF-P26 I received is almost a worthy replacement for the ICF-S10MK2, but not quite. On the one hand when compared to the legacy model my P26 is slightly better sounding and has insanely longer battery life. It is a very sensible emergency radio since batteries last 150% longer. On the other hand my copy falls short in reception. Yours may be better, or it could be worse. My new P26 is not the value to me at $20 that the S10MK2 was at the $10 original retail or even at the final $13 retail when discontinued. Yes the P26 has other improvements but they are things nobody was complaining about like battery life and nobody ever suggested a battery condition monitor LED be added either. The battery monitor LED is pig lipstick and does not really impact reception or sound which are the two big criteria people look for in a pocket radio. I do not foresee P26 production spanning three decades as the S10MK2 did. I am not disappointed enough to return my P26 since it sounds more pleasant on FM music and I will use it for that. Based on two weeks of experience I can say my new ICF-P26 is an above average sounding FM pocket radio that looks neat, but is not an exceptional receiver like the legacy model was. My Sony ICF-38 which is still in production sounds better and picks up better than the P-26, but it is much larger, heavier and more expensive. At this writing the final inventory of S10MK2 models are in retail channels including Amazon. If you want one, better hurry and bring your wallet because prices on them have soared 300% to 400% already and will almost surely go higher as supplies dwindle. If the P26 was better than the S10MK2 then this price spike would not be happening on the legacy model would it? Joni Mitchell wrote a line in “Big Yellow Taxi” that went, “Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone,” and it seems the legacy Sony ICF-S10MK2 will be missed more than I first thought.
